Mesotrione is absorbed by both the foliage and the roots and moves upward and downward within the plant, where it inhibits the HPPD enzyme that weeds need for growth. Atrazine is a selective systemic herbicide that inhibits photosystem II, disrupting photosynthesis and leading to the death of the weed.
